N-Ary Summation

The N-Ary Summation at U+2211 is the mathematical operator used to mean “add up a sequence of terms.” It is part of the Mathematical Operators block and is the standard large summation sign in printed and digital formulas, especially when the number of addends is variable or defined by an index. In mathematics, ∑ most often appears with an index and bounds, such as summing xᵢ from i = 1 to n, to represent x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ compactly. It is central in algebra, calculus, discrete mathematics, statistics, and probability, where it is used for series, finite sums, expected values, sample means, variances, and totals over sets. In science and engineering, the same symbol denotes accumulated contributions: total force from multiple components, energy over states, error across observations, or current through several branches. In programming and data work it is also widely recognized as a “sum” icon or label in spreadsheets, calculators, dashboards, and analytics tools, even when the actual formula is entered with a word or function name rather than the symbol itself. Typographically, this character is distinct from the Greek capital letter sigma, although the two are historically related and can look similar in some fonts. In high-quality math layout, limits may appear above and below the sign in display equations or beside it in inline text.
