Precedes But Not Equivalent to

Precedes But Not Equivalent to at U+22E8 is a mathematical relation symbol used to say that one item comes before another in an ordering, while also explicitly ruling out equivalence between them. It is part of the Mathematical Operators block, alongside other specialized comparison and ordering signs. Its main setting is order theory and related areas of abstract algebra, logic, and theoretical computer science. There, a precedes relation can mean “is earlier than,” “is below,” “is ranked before,” or “is less specific than,” depending on the structure being discussed; writing a ⋨ b states precedence from a to b with a non-equivalence condition built in. The symbol is most likely to appear in formal papers, textbooks, and typeset lecture notes that need a compact distinction between weak precedence, strict precedence, equivalence, and non-equivalence. It is uncommon in everyday arithmetic or programming notation, and many authors instead spell out the relation or use more familiar paired symbols when the exact glyph is not needed.
