Symbol for Device Control Four

Symbol for Device Control Four at U+2414 is a visible placeholder for the fourth device-control control character, making an otherwise nonprinting code point readable in text. It belongs to the Control Pictures block, whose characters depict legacy C0 control functions rather than performing those functions themselves. Its main use is in technical documentation, terminal manuals, protocol references, and debugging displays that need to show control-character data without actually sending it to a device. In older serial and telecommunications contexts, Device Control Four was one of a small set of device-control codes whose exact meaning depended on the equipment or protocol, so this symbol may appear in tables of control codes or byte dumps. Because this is a printable picture, inserting it does not trigger device control or carry the operational behavior of the underlying control character. The practical gotcha is that search, logs, or copied text containing the picture symbol are not the same as data containing the real control code, even though the label and appearance are closely related.
