Combining Double Breve Below

Combining Double Breve Below at U+035C is a nonspacing diacritic that draws a curved tie mark underneath two neighboring characters, showing that they are to be read as one connected unit. It belongs to the Combining Diacritical Marks block and attaches to surrounding base letters rather than occupying its own normal character space. Its most common use is in phonetic and linguistic transcription, especially when marking affricates or other coarticulated sounds. For example, a transcription may tie t and s, or d and z, to show that the pair represents one complex consonant rather than two separate sounds pronounced in sequence. It also appears in scholarly transliteration, dialect studies, and language documentation where editors need to preserve fine distinctions in pronunciation. The mark is chosen when the tie needs to sit below the letters, often because other marks above the same letters are already in use or because a transcription tradition prefers the lower tie. The main practical gotcha is that it is a combining mark spanning more than one base character, so display quality depends heavily on shaping and font support. In weaker text engines it may attach to only one letter, sit off-center, or be hard to search because the visible tied sequence is stored as separate characters plus the combining mark.
