Combining Double Macron

The Combining Double Macron at U+035E places one horizontal overline across the pair of characters before and after its attachment point. It is a nonspacing mark in the Combining Diacritical Marks block, used to show that two adjacent letters are being treated as a linked unit rather than as separate letters. Its best-known role is in phonetic and phonological transcription, where a double macron can mark a sound sequence or contour that spans two symbols. Linguists may use it over a vowel pair to indicate a long or level element extending across both letters, or over a digraph-like sequence when the notation needs to show a single combined value. It also appears in scholarly text editing, language documentation, and some romanization or dialect materials when a printed source has a bar drawn over two letters. In those settings it is chosen to preserve the typography of the source more precisely than a normal macron over just one letter. Because it is a combining mark, it should not be treated as an independent visible character: it attaches to neighboring text and may affect cursor movement, deletion, and searching. Placement is font- and layout-sensitive, so the bar may not align neatly over both letters in all environments.
