Combining Double Ring Below

Combining Double Ring Below at U+035A places a pair of small ring marks underneath the preceding character, functioning as a nonspacing diacritic rather than an independent symbol. It is part of the Combining Diacritical Marks block, so its visible result depends on the base letter or sign it is attached to. Its practical use is highly specialized, mainly in phonetic and linguistic transcription where scholars need to mark a sound with a rare below-letter feature not covered by ordinary accents. It may appear in archival language documentation, narrow phonetic notation, or custom orthographies to distinguish one consonant or vowel quality from another within a particular publication’s notation. Because it combines with the character before it, the most important gotcha is placement: if copied without its base letter, it may seem to vanish, attach to the wrong character, or display awkwardly. Search and comparison can also differ between a precomposed-looking glyph and a base character followed by this combining mark, especially in specialist linguistic databases.
