Combining Latin Small Letter M

Combining Latin Small Letter M at U+036B adds a small m above the character that comes before it, acting as a nonspacing letter-like diacritic rather than a separate typed m. It is part of the Combining Diacritical Marks block, where marks attach to base letters to refine pronunciation, annotation, or scholarly transcription. Its practical use is mostly in specialized linguistic and phonetic work. Transcription systems may use a raised m to mark an m-like secondary articulation, nasal quality, or a convention-specific modifier attached to a sound, especially in detailed field notes, dialect studies, or descriptions of nonstandard pronunciation. It can also occur in philology, manuscript editing, and legacy scholarly notation when a source writes a small m above another letter and the edition needs to preserve that layout faithfully. The main practical issue is that it belongs to the preceding character, so selection, deletion, searching, and visual placement can feel different from working with an ordinary letter m.
