Combining Latin Small Letter V

Combining Latin Small Letter V at U+036E adds a small raised v-shaped Latin letter above the character that comes before it. It is a nonspacing mark in the Combining Diacritical Marks block, so it modifies a base letter instead of behaving like an ordinary standalone v. Its main use is in specialized linguistic transcription, especially where scholars need to record fine phonetic detail, dialect forms, or historical pronunciations not covered by common IPA symbols. A raised v may be attached to a vowel or consonant in a local notation system to show a v-like offglide, a secondary element, or an editorial distinction in the way a sound was heard or written. It can also occur in encoded editions of older texts, manuscript transcriptions, and paleographic data when a source has a superscript v or v-shaped abbreviation above another letter. The important practical issue is that it belongs to the preceding character, which can make selection, deletion, line spacing, and searches behave differently from a visible spacing superscript letter.
