Combining X Below

Combining X Below at U+0353 is a nonspacing diacritic that places a small x-shaped mark under the preceding character. It belongs to the Combining Diacritical Marks block, so it modifies nearby text rather than acting as a normal standalone symbol. Its main use is in specialist phonetic, linguistic, and manuscript-transcription work where editors need a compact below-letter mark not covered by ordinary accents. A transcriber might attach it to a Latin letter to indicate an uncertain reading, a local phonetic convention, or a project-specific annotation in a critical edition. Because it is combining, the mark depends heavily on the base letter and font positioning. The practical gotcha is that it can be overlooked in searching, sorting, or proofreading: two words may look nearly alike while one contains an extra below-letter diacritic that changes the intended scholarly notation.
