Hryvnia Sign

Hryvnia Sign at U+20B4 denotes the national currency of Ukraine, the hryvnia, in the same way that a dedicated sign can stand in for a written currency name. It is part of the Currency Symbols block and is a printable symbol used with monetary amounts rather than a letter or punctuation mark. In everyday Ukrainian finance, it appears on price tags, invoices, bank interfaces, accounting documents, exchange-rate tables, and news reports, as in ₴500 for five hundred hryvnias. Ukrainian typography often also uses the abbreviation “грн,” especially in running text or official-style documents, so the sign and abbreviation commonly coexist. The symbol is most relevant in Ukrainian-language contexts and international material that lists prices or aid, trade, travel, salaries, donations, or exchange rates involving Ukraine. Outside those settings it is chiefly seen in currency pickers, financial software, spreadsheets, and economic data where concise currency labeling is important. Its shape can be mistaken at small sizes for a stylized Latin letter or for other struck currency signs, so the surrounding amount and Ukrainian currency context usually provide the clue.
