Commercial Minus Sign

Commercial Minus Sign at U+2052 denotes a specialized minus-like punctuation mark from the General Punctuation block. It was encoded for commercial and business typography rather than for ordinary arithmetic, where the standard minus sign or hyphen-minus is normally used. Its main real-world role is in legacy accounting, price lists, invoices, and commercial forms that need to reproduce older printed conventions exactly. In such material, the mark can indicate a negative amount, deduction, discount, or debit-style subtraction in a tabular setting, especially when digitizing archival business documents. Today it is uncommon outside faithful transcription, typography testing, and Unicode reference work. Readers may confuse it with a division sign, percent-like symbol, or decorative punctuation, so modern financial and mathematical writing generally avoids it unless the exact historical character is required.
