Latin Small Letter Squat Reversed Esh

Latin Small Letter Squat Reversed Esh at U+0285 is a phonetic transcription letter used for a specific fricative-like sound value, not an ordinary alphabetic letter in everyday writing. It belongs to the IPA Extensions block, which contains symbols used mainly by linguists, dictionaries, and speech researchers. Its chief use is in Sinological and related phonetic notation, especially for the apical vowel or syllabic fricative heard in some Mandarin pronunciations. In analyses of syllables such as shi, zhi, chi, or ri, this symbol may be used where a plain vowel letter would misleadingly suggest an ordinary i-like vowel. The character can also appear in academic descriptions of Sinitic languages, phonology textbooks, language documentation, and older or specialized transcription systems that need to distinguish “retroflex” or retracted apical vocalic sounds from similar dental or alveolar ones. It is closely associated with narrow transcription and language-specific phonetic detail, so it is uncommon in general IPA use. Because it resembles a reversed or reshaped esh, it may be confused visually with other IPA letters in small fonts, especially symbols used for fricatives. Substituting a more familiar letter can change the intended phonetic analysis rather than merely the appearance.
