Latin Small Letter Z with Retroflex Hook

Latin Small Letter Z with Retroflex Hook at U+0290 represents the voiced retroflex fricative, a “z-like” consonant made with the tongue curled back. It is a lowercase letter in the IPA Extensions block, used chiefly for precise phonetic transcription rather than for ordinary spelling in most languages. In the International Phonetic Alphabet, it transcribes the sound heard in languages such as Mandarin for the pinyin r sound in many descriptions, Polish ż/rz in broad comparisons, or Russian ж when analyzed as retroflex or retracted in particular phonetic contexts. Linguists use it in word forms, sound inventories, and field notes to distinguish a retroflex fricative from the more familiar voiced postalveolar fricative written with ezh. The letter also appears in language documentation, speech pathology, and phonology papers when authors need to mark an exact place of articulation. It can be easy to confuse visually with similar IPA letters such as ʒ, but the retroflex hook signals the curled-back tongue position and is therefore meaningful, not decorative.
