Latin Small Letter Upsilon with Stroke

Latin Small Letter Upsilon with Stroke at U+1D7F is a specialized phonetic letter used to write a particular vowel quality in transcription. It is part of the Phonetic Extensions block, a Unicode area for characters needed by phonetic, linguistic, and speech-related notation rather than ordinary spelling. Its main use is in the International Phonetic Alphabet and related phonetic transcription systems, where ᵿ represents a near-close central rounded vowel. Linguists use it when a vowel is produced with the tongue near the close position, centered rather than front or back, and with lip rounding; it is useful in narrow transcriptions of languages or dialects where this sound contrasts with nearby vowels. You may encounter it in pronunciation dictionaries, academic articles on phonology, field linguistics notes, and language documentation. It is less common than broad IPA symbols such as u or ə, because many practical transcriptions choose a simpler symbol unless the central rounded quality is important. Its closest visual confusable is a small Greek upsilon-like letter with an added stroke, so accurate fonts and text search matter in linguistic data.
