Modifier Letter Small Eng

Modifier Letter Small Eng at U+1D51 is a raised phonetic letter that represents a superscript form of eng, the consonant symbol for the velar nasal sound heard at the end of English “sing.” It is part of the Phonetic Extensions block and functions as a modifier letter rather than as ordinary punctuation or a full-size alphabetic letter. Its main role is in phonetic transcription, especially where a nasal release or secondary nasal articulation is written after another consonant. In IPA-influenced notation, a sequence such as kᵑ can indicate a consonant with a following or overlapping velar nasal element, depending on the transcription system and the language being described. Linguists also use it in detailed field notes, grammars, and dictionaries for languages where small phonetic distinctions matter, including descriptions of prenasalized or nasalized consonants. It may appear in comparative or historical work when authors need compact inline notation instead of a separate diacritic. Because it is a specialized phonetic modifier, it is not normally used in everyday spelling of languages. It can be confused visually with a small raised “n” plus a tail in fonts that draw eng poorly, so accurate phonetic fonts are helpful in scholarly material.
