Modifier Letter Small Greek Gamma

Modifier Letter Small Greek Gamma at U+1D5E is a superscript-style modifier letter used to add a small gamma-shaped phonetic or scholarly notation to nearby text. It belongs to the Phonetic Extensions block and is categorized as a modifier letter, meaning it acts like a spacing letter rather than a combining accent. Its main use is in phonetic transcription and linguistics, especially in systems that need raised Greek letters to mark secondary articulations, voice quality, or language-specific sound details. A linguist might place ᵞ after a base symbol when a transcription convention defines that raised gamma as a particular modification of the sound, rather than as an independent Greek letter. It can also appear in digitized dictionaries, fieldwork notes, and academic editions where older or specialized phonetic notation is being preserved accurately. Because it resembles a superscript Greek gamma but is a distinct Unicode character, searching or normalizing text may not match it with an ordinary gamma formatted in superscript.
