Ahom Consonant Sign Medial Ligating Ra

Ahom Consonant Sign Medial Ligating Ra at U+1171F is a consonant sign in the Ahom block that marks a medial ra attached to a preceding consonant. It is part of the historical Ahom script, formerly used for the Tai Ahom language in Assam, and it helps write consonant clusters where an r-like element belongs inside the syllable rather than starting a separate one. Its main use today is in digital editions, dictionaries, and scholarly work on Ahom manuscripts, chronicles, ritual texts, and language revival materials. Editors use it when transcribing spellings that distinguish a ligating medial ra from an independent Ahom ra letter, preserving how the original script joined consonantal elements. Because Ahom is not a common everyday digital script, this sign is most often encountered in specialist fonts, Unicode charts, teaching resources, and archival text projects. A practical issue is that it depends on shaping behavior: without suitable Ahom font support, the intended ligature or attachment may not appear correctly, which can make manuscript transcriptions harder to read.
