Cyrillic Small Letter O with Diaeresis

Cyrillic Small Letter O with Diaeresis at U+04E7 is a Cyrillic lowercase vowel letter used to write an “o”-type sound that is distinguished from plain о in several extended Cyrillic alphabets. It is part of the Cyrillic block and is treated as a letter, not as punctuation or a decorative accented form. Its most visible use is in minority-language orthographies based on Cyrillic, especially in Komi, Khanty, Mari, and Udmurt materials, where ӧ represents a separate vowel phoneme. In dictionaries, schoolbooks, newspapers, and language-learning resources, it can appear inside ordinary words just like any other alphabet letter, marking a pronunciation contrast that would be lost if replaced by о. The exact sound value depends on the language: it is often associated with a front rounded vowel, similar in broad terms to the vowel written ö in Latin-script languages such as German or Finnish. In transliteration, names and words containing ӧ may therefore be rendered with Latin ö, though official romanization practices vary by language and country. A practical point is that ӧ can be visually confused with a plain Cyrillic о plus a separate diaeresis mark, but the precomposed letter is the normal encoded character for these alphabets. Accurate spelling matters for search, sorting, and language tagging in texts that use these Cyrillic-based orthographies.
