Cyrillic Small Letter Zhe with Diaeresis

Cyrillic Small Letter Zhe with Diaeresis at U+04DD is a lowercase Cyrillic letter that represents a modified zhe sound in certain Cyrillic-based alphabets. It is part of the Cyrillic block and pairs with the capital letter Cyrillic Capital Letter Zhe with Diaeresis for normal case distinction. Its main use is in Udmurt, where ӝ is a regular alphabet letter rather than a decorative form of ж. In Udmurt spelling it denotes a palatalized or softened voiced affricate/fricative sound, and it appears in everyday words, names, dictionaries, school materials, and local publications written in the language. The letter may also appear in linguistic works, transliteration tables, and digital archives that document Udmurt or compare Cyrillic orthographies for Uralic languages. Because it looks like Cyrillic ж with two dots, replacing it with plain ж changes the spelling and can obscure pronunciation or dictionary lookup in texts that distinguish the two letters.
