Ethiopic Syllable Fwee

Ethiopic Syllable Fwee at U+138A is a syllabic Ethiopic character representing the consonant-vowel sound “fwē” in writing systems that use the Geʽez-derived script. It is part of the Ethiopic Supplement block, which adds less common Ethiopic syllables needed for particular languages and orthographic traditions. In real use, this sign is mainly relevant to Ethiopian and Eritrean language materials that require the extended “fwa/fwe” series rather than the core Ethiopic set. It may appear in dictionaries, linguistic descriptions, Bible or liturgical transcription, educational texts, and digitized manuscripts where a word’s pronunciation calls for the labialized f sound followed by an e-like vowel. Because it is a specialized syllable, it is far less common than basic Ethiopic letters used for Amharic or Tigrinya everyday text. The main practical concern is coverage: general Ethiopic fonts may include it, but older fonts, keyboards, or search tools sometimes handle Supplement-block characters less consistently than the standard Ethiopic range.
