Ethiopic Combining Gemination Mark

Ethiopic Combining Gemination Mark at U+135F is a nonspacing mark that signals consonant doubling in Ethiopic-script text. It is part of the Ethiopic block and belongs to the class of combining characters, so it attaches to a preceding Ethiopic syllable rather than occupying its own spacing position. Its main use is in scholarly and pedagogical writing for Amharic, Tigrinya, Geʽez, and related Ethiopic-script languages when gemination must be shown explicitly. In Amharic, for example, doubled consonants can distinguish words or grammatical forms, but ordinary Ethiopic spelling often leaves that information unmarked; this sign lets dictionaries, grammars, language lessons, and linguistic examples mark the doubled consonant directly on the relevant syllable. It is not common in everyday newspapers, books, messaging, or signage, where readers infer gemination from vocabulary and context. The practical gotcha is that it depends on proper combining-mark positioning: without Ethiopic-aware font support, it may appear misplaced, separated, or visually unclear, and searches may miss forms if one version includes the mark and another omits it.
