Ethiopic Digit Three

Ethiopic Digit Three at U+136B represents the number three in the traditional Ethiopic numeral system. It is part of the Ethiopic Unicode block, alongside letters, punctuation, and numeric signs used with the Geʽez script and modern Ethiopic-script languages. Its main use is in Amharic, Tigrinya, Geʽez, and related textual traditions when numbers are written with Ethiopic numerals rather than European digits. Readers may encounter ፫ in religious books, manuscripts, liturgical references, chapter or verse numbering, page numbers, dates, and educational materials teaching the Ethiopic numbering system. In scholarly and archival work, the character is used when transcribing or digitally preserving Ethiopic manuscripts and printed sources exactly as they appear. It can also appear in typography, calendars, and culturally specific design where Ethiopic numerals are chosen for authenticity or visual continuity with Ethiopic-script text. A practical point is that this is a numeric character with a specific value, not a stylized substitute for the Arabic digit 3. Searches, sorting, and numeric processing may treat it differently from ordinary decimal digits unless software explicitly supports Ethiopic numerals.
