Ethiopic Wordspace

Ethiopic Wordspace at U+1361 is a visible separator used to mark a word break in traditional Ethiopic-script text. It belongs to the Ethiopic block and functions like a space in purpose, but it is printed as punctuation rather than treated as Unicode whitespace. Its main setting is Amharic, Tigrinya, Geʽez, and other languages written with the Ethiopic script, especially in older typography, liturgical books, dictionaries, and editions that preserve traditional punctuation. In such text it separates words between Ethiopic syllables, while other Ethiopic punctuation marks handle phrase, sentence, and paragraph divisions. Modern Amharic and Tigrinya publishing often uses the ordinary space instead, particularly in newspapers, websites, mobile messaging, and educational materials. The Ethiopic Wordspace therefore most often appears when reproducing classical or formal orthography, digitizing manuscripts and printed works, or maintaining scholarly transcriptions of Ethiopic texts. A practical issue is that many text-processing tools do not treat it as a word boundary automatically, because it is punctuation rather than a whitespace character. Searching, line breaking, tokenization, and copy-pasted text may need Ethiopic-aware handling to avoid running words together or missing matches.
