Coptic Small Letter Hori

Coptic Small Letter Hori at U+03E9 represents a lowercase letter of the Coptic alphabet, used for a consonant sound commonly transliterated as h or ḥ depending on the scholarly system. It belongs to the Greek And Coptic block, where several Coptic-specific letters are encoded alongside Greek characters historically used to write Coptic. In real text, this letter appears in Coptic-language manuscripts, editions, dictionaries, grammars, and liturgical material, especially for words written in the Sahidic and Bohairic traditions. It is the lowercase partner of Coptic Capital Letter Hori, and it is used as an ordinary alphabetic letter within Coptic words rather than as a mathematical or symbolic sign. Scholars of Egyptology, Coptic studies, church history, and biblical textual studies encounter it when transcribing or quoting Coptic sources. Its shape can be visually confused with some Greek-derived or Latin-looking forms in unfamiliar fonts, so accurate Coptic fonts and text search by the actual Unicode character matter in digital editions and databases.
