Greek Small Letter Omega with Tonos

Greek Small Letter Omega with Tonos at U+03CE is the accented lowercase omega used in modern Greek writing to mark stress on the vowel sound /o/. It is part of the Greek and Coptic block and belongs to the ordinary lowercase Greek alphabetic characters with diacritics. In everyday Greek, it appears in words whose stressed syllable contains omega, such as εγώ “I,” εδώ “here,” and καλώς “well.” The tonos is required in standard monotonic Greek spelling for most multisyllable words, so this letter is common in books, news, education, messaging, names, and addresses written in Greek. It also appears in transliteration and language-learning materials when the original Greek spelling is preserved, especially in vocabulary lists, grammar examples, and dictionaries. The unaccented ω is a different spelling form, and omicron with tonos, ό, can represent the same modern vowel sound but belongs to different words and etymological spellings. A practical text-processing issue is normalization: the same visible letter may be stored either as a single precomposed character or as omega plus a combining tonos, which can affect exact-match search or string comparison if software does not normalize Greek text.
