Miao Letter Tone-5

Miao Letter Tone-5 at U+16F96 is a tone letter used to mark one of the lexical tones in the Pollard-style Miao script. It is part of the Miao Unicode block, which encodes letters and signs for writing several Hmongic languages, especially varieties historically written with the A-Hmao or Pollard script. In actual text, this character is placed after a syllable to show its tone, much as other Miao tone letters distinguish words that have the same consonants and vowels but different pitch patterns. It appears in A-Hmao language materials, Bible translations, hymnals, primers, dictionaries, and linguistic examples where preserving tone is essential to the spelling. Its use is mainly tied to communities, educators, missionaries, and linguists working with Miao languages of southwest China rather than to general punctuation or mathematics. When transcribing or digitizing older Pollard-script materials, choosing the correct tone letter matters because a visually similar or omitted tone mark can change the word being represented.
