Miao Letter Tone-8

Miao Letter Tone-8 at U+16F99 marks one of the tone values used in the Miao script, rather than representing an independent consonant or vowel sound. It is part of the Miao Unicode block, which encodes the Pollard-style script used for writing several Hmongic, especially A-Hmao and related Miao-language varieties in southwest China. In ordinary Miao orthography, tone letters are placed with a syllable to show pitch or phonation distinctions that change word meaning. A word written with the same base letters can be a different word when followed by a different tone sign, so this character functions much like a required spelling element in tonal-language text, not as optional pronunciation help. You are most likely to encounter it in Miao-language literacy materials, Bible translations and hymnals using the Pollard tradition, linguistic examples, dictionaries, and digitized community or archival texts. Its use is specialized: outside Miao-script documents, it mainly matters to scholars, font developers, keyboard implementers, and people preserving or searching Miao-language materials.
